On the 16th of July the Hat Museum will hold a macrame workshop. Macrame technique uses a series of simple and continuous knots that by intersecting each other allows the creation of absolutely beautiful decoration items. Let yourself be surprised with this ancient technique and find out how you can create the most functional and decorative objects just by using a single thread. This workshop will be conducted by Sónia Rocha.
Next Saturday, 25th June, the Hat Museum will open its new temporary exhibition entitled “The straw hat is the most beautiful thing to make”. Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the emancipation of S. João da Madeira, the Hat Museum presents a set of temporary exhibitions dedicated to some of the industries that wrote the history of S. João da Madeira. After the exhibition “What our hands have made” the Hat Museum presents the collections of hats, machines, raw-materials and other objects related with the straw hat production.
As it has been tradition, since the opening of the Hat Museum, this Saturday, 25th June, the museum will organize the XII Day of the Milliner. Celebrating the Museum's anniversary (22nd June), this meeting gathers former and present hatters creating bridges between the different generations of these professionals. The Day begins with the opening of the temporary exhibition “The straw hat is the most beautiful thing thing to make”, it follows with a performance by the Tuna d’Os voluntários de S. João da Madeira and ends with the tradicional afternoon lunch. Between 14th and 21st of May, the Hat Museum celebrated the International Museum Day and received more that 1500 visitors. The celebrations started in the morning of the 14th of May with the thematic visit “Cultural Landscapes”, about local personalities that contributed to the development of S. João da Madeira. The route started at the Hat Museum with the visit “A city of hats” and followed outdoors with a tour to many of the historical buildings of the city as Quinta dos Oliveiras, Quinta do Rei da Farinha,. Quinta dos Condes and many many others. In that same afternoon, the Hat Museum opened its new temporary exhibition - UILLA SANCTO IOANNE QUE DICENT DEMATEIRA. This exhibition celebrated at the same time the International Museum Day (18th May), City Day (16th May) and the 90th anniversary of the town’s Independence. On this opening the Hat Museum received the Coro de Câmara de S. João da Madeira in a brilliant performance. Between 14th and 21st of may, the Educational Service of the Hat Museum conducted 36 guided tours to more than 1000 visitors. On the European Museum Night, 21st of may, the Hat Museum was open from 10h00 to 00h00 and conducted several thematic visits to many groups. The night started with a thematic dinner organised by Fábrica dos Sentidos, the museum restaurant and, by 22h00, started the theatrical performance “O Último Turno dos Unhas Negras”, based on João da Silva Correia novel "Unhas Negras". This performance was possible due to all 35 actors from the following theater groups “A Bem Dizer”, “Anim’art”, “Associação ÉBom Viver”, “Cultura Viva”, “Tepas”, “TOJ” and “Troupe”. This memorable and emotional moment was only possible thanks to the commitment of these actors and their ditrectors. Therefore the Hat Museum would like to thank everyone that contributed for this celebration, from the colleagues of the Municipality to the theatre groups and city's associations and, at last, to those who visited us and took part of our activities and helped, through social networks, to promote our program. It was your support and availability that allowed us to fulfil our celebration!

This year we invite you to discover what happened to Gonçalo Pimpão, Gervásio Baptista and his son, to Tomás and Palmira and many other characters based on the João da Silva Correia novel "Unhas negras". This performance will be held with the participation of the following city theatre groups "A Bem Dizer", "Anim’art", "Associação É Bom Viver", "Cultura Viva", "Tepas", "TOJ" and "Troupe". The performance will happen on outdoors, behind the Hat Museum park. The entrance is free.
Next saturday, 14th May at 4 p.m. the Hat Museum will open its new temporary exhibition entitled "Uilla sancto ioanne que dicent de mateira ". The first written reference to "Uilla sancto ioanne que dicent de mateira" dates from 1088. Under the administration of Vila da Feira and later under Oliveira de Azeméis, S. João da Madeira registered an intense development during the mid-nineteenth century. The local’s ambition creates a social movement that led to the administrative of this town's independence in 1926. Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the emancipation of S. João da Madeira, the Hat Museum presents an exhibition about the most relevant moments and personalities that contributed to this historical event.

This satuday, 30th of april, at 16 p.m., the Hat Museum will receive the presentation of the biographical book entitled "Manoel Vieira Araújo. A sua vida, a sua obra, a sua terra”, dedicated to an important industrial, mayor and cultural personality of S. João da Madeira. We hope to count with your presence.
Next saturday, 9th April, the Hat Museum will open its new temporary exhibition entitled "What our hands have made". During many years the hatters of S. João da Madeira have created thousands of hat's models and brands. True artists in the production of felt hats, they dressed the heads of the Portuguese and many other people around the world. Aristocrata, Cantoneiro, Capeline, D' Aviz, Dallas, Derby, Garbo, Hollywood, Lord and Vacas Malhadas were some of the models produced by them. This exhibition intends to explore not only the diversity of men, women and children’s hats produced in S. João da Madeira but also some of the most curious advertising of these companies.
To celebrate Scout's Day, the Hat Museum challenges all scouts to participate in this contest with their most creative photo using a scout hat. Your best photo should be send until April 23rd. The most voted photo on the museum's facebook page will win a “welcome kit” that includes four free entrances to the Hat Museum. On 9th of April, Saturday, the Hat Museum will hold a workshop of soap felting. During this workshop the participants will develop their abilities in the wet felting technique by creating felted soaps, aromatic wool balls and ecological wool dryer balls. This workshop will be conducted by the Association Casa Céu e Terra. The "Poesia à mesa", a poetry campaign, returned to the streets of S. João da Madeira. Between 11th and 21st of March, the six poets that are going to be distinguished on this year’s edition, Fiamma Hasse Pais Brandão, Edmundo Bettencour, Angélica Freitas, José Fanha, Nuno Moura and Daniel Maia-Pinto Rodrigues, will travel to the most unique places surprising its publics with tears, laughs and smiles.
The Hat Museum is conceptually oriented to the theme of millinery industry, exposing issues related to industrial production, commercialization, the social habits and economic impact.
Known in S. João da Madeira as “The New Factory” the Empresa Industrial de Chapelaria was established in 1914.
