VOLUNTEER AT THE MUSEUM

Would you like to use some of your spare time in cultural activities? Does the museum world interest you?
Sign up in our Volunteer Program and receive, in exchange, new social and cultural experiences and skills.

 

Who is the volunteer?
The volunteer is a person that by choice, unselfishly and without payment, dedicates part of his time to cultural activities. Volunteering involves give (time, resources and labour) and receive (satisfaction, experience, human relations).


The volunteer is governed by the following principles:
- Solidarity: with selfless attitude the volunteer practices an activity of collective, general and public interest. Volunteering is a way of dealing with needs, problems and social interests. Voluntary activities require a common commitment that aims the improvement of collective life of the community.
- Participation: the intervention of volunteers takes place in activities of social interest.
- Complementarity: volunteers do not exit to replace human resources; they should avoid tasks that can be done by internal professional workers.
- Gratuity: the volunteer is not remunerated for exercising volunteering. Instead, it should be practiced as a result of free, ethical and very personal choice.  
- Responsibility: the volunteer is responsible for all the activities that he committed to accomplish.
- Convergence: the performance of the volunteer should be oriented towards the culture and objectives of the promoter.

 

The volunteer performs its action due to three types of motivations:
1 - for ideological, ethical or moral reasons and a need to help the improvement of society.
2 - for personal reasons and  for feel useful, in order to participate in new experiences, to developed himself as a person and to relate and work with others.
3 - the regular volunteering, specifically the one regarding the assistance to elderly people, aims the creation of ties between different generations and the enhancement of experiences that are so characteristic in this age range.

Registration for the Voluntary Program of the Hat Museum are open all year. 
The candidates must be over 18 years and the secondary school terminated.
The candidates must send their curriculum to the museum email museu.chapelaria@gmail.com with the subject [application for Voluntary Program]. 


The curriculum vitae must have the following information:
- Personal data: full name, ID card number, date of birth, nationality, address, postal code, telephone, email, academic degree and other qualifications, professional experience and other capacities, activities, hobbies. 
- Other relevant information that help a better knowledge about the candidate and its skills. 
- Available daily time for voluntary activity.

The volunteer can carry out its activities in the Educational Service, Documentation Centre or Collections Management  Service.

TYPE OF VOLUNTEER ACTIONS

In an organization, a volunteer can perform a great number of tasks including:

 

- Research: collect data and testimonies about certain situations, territories, communities or social sectors;
- Information and awareness: disseminate and give notice of certain situations, needs or specific problems, mobilizing the conscience of others;
- Guidance and counselling: provide support and facilitate information to individuals or groups in need;
- Training: transmit values and improve professional skills of persons or groups;
- Fundraising and resources: collect material and other resources required for development of solidarity projects and to attend to emergency situations;
- Support and direct assistance: to people in need;
- Planning and project management: analyse needs, articulate goals and action strategies, search and organize all kinds of resources, assess results.

The rights of the volunteer are:
- access to training programs in order to improve his skills;
- access to healthy and safe working conditions;
- establish with the promoter, a volunteer program which regulates their mutual relations and contents and also the nature and duration of the volunteer work; 
- be heard about decisions that will affect the development of his volunteer work.

VOLUNTEER OBLIGATIONS

Volunteers are people who freely commit themselves to develop volunteer actions, in a responsible and selflessly way, according to the their own skills. They have as obligations: 
- give the best of themselves, acting with professionalism, humanity and effectiveness;
- respect the ethical principles that govern the activity they carry out and respect the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
- respect the confidentiality rules of the promoter, make a responsible use of the material at their disposal and use in a proper way the volunteer accreditation given by the promoter;
- observe the regulatory rules of the promoter as well as its programs and projects;
- act in a diligent, free and solidary way;
- participate in training programs for volunteers;
- ensure the proper use of resources, goods, equipment and utensils available;
- collaborate with the promoter’s professional team, respecting their options and following their technical guidance;
- not assume the role of representative of the institution without the knowledge and prior approval of the promotor;
- ensure regular voluntary work in accordance with the program established with the promoter;
- use the Volunteer identification during the exercise of the volunteer activity.
